Biography: Prof. Gangil Byun (S’12, M’15, SM’21) received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Electronic and Electrical Engineering from Hongik University, Seoul, South Korea, in 2010 and 2012, respectively, and his Ph.D. degree in Electronics and Computer Engineering from Hanyang University, Seoul, South Korea, in 2015. Following graduation, he joined Hongik University as a Research Professor, where he conducted research for two years. In February 2018, he joined Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST), Ulsan, South Korea, where he is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering. He is the Director of the Mission-Driven Satellite Systems Research Center (Space-K) and the Core RF/Power Component Research Center for Low-Orbit Next-Generation Satellites (LONGS). He also leads the InnoCORE Intelligent Defense Systems Research Group (IDS RG). He served as an IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society (AP-S) Young Professional Ambassador in 2023 and received the IEEE AP-S Young Professional of the Year Award in 2024. Dr. Byun’s research focuses on millimeter-wave antennas and metasurfaces, with an emphasis on adaptive beamforming for 5G/6G communications, satellite systems, defense applications, and radar. He is the inventor of Radar-in-Display (RiD), a pioneering concept that integrates radar functionality into display panels. His work bridges fundamental electromagnetics and practical system design, integrating antenna engineering with signal processing to advance beamforming. His current interests include ultra-wideband and sparse antenna arrays, satellite and display-integrated antennas, and emerging integration technologies such as antenna-in-package (AiP) and reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS), aiming to enable future wireless communication systems.
