Title:Testing for Advanced Phased Array Systems, Challenges and Recent Advances

    Abstract:
Advanced phased array technologies are evolving toward low cost, high integration, high operating frequencies, multi-beam capability, wide beam steering range, and large-aperture antenna arrays, alongside distributed array configurations for emerging 6G communication, non-terrestrial network (NTN), and radar applications. These rapid technological advances have brought increasingly stringent requirements for phased array testing. Practical testing faces multiple critical challenges, including insufficient phase measurement information, compact testing distances constrained by cost budgets, non-ideal factory testing environments, high demands on testing efficiency, and strong industrial requirements for cost reduction. This talk will systematically elaborate on the key testing challenges faced by advanced phased array systems. Furthermore, it will present the latest research progress and promising technical solutions to tackle the aforementioned challenges.

    Biography:
Wei Fan received the Ph.D. degree from Aalborg University, Aalborg, Denmark, in 2014. He was with Aalborg University, where he became an Assistant Professor in 2014, a Tenured Associate Professor, and the Leader of “Wireless Propagation and Over-the-Air (OTA) Testing” Research Group in 2017, and a Professor (Promotion Program) in 2023. He was with Intel Mobile Communications, Aalborg, in 2011, and with Anite Telecoms Oy (now Keysight Technologies), Oulu, Finland, in 2014, as a Research Intern. He also holds a Docentship (Adjunct Professor) with Oulu University, Finland, since 2023. He is a Chair Professor with Southeast University, Nanjing, China. His current research interests include over-the-air (OTA) testing of multiple antenna systems, radio channel sounding, parameter estimation, modeling, and emulation, and antenna measurements. Dr. Fan is a Senior Member of IEEE, AMTA and URSI and a fellow of IET. He was a recipient of the Sapere Aude Research Talent Award from Independent Research Fund Denmark, the URSI Young Scientist Award, the IEEE AP-S Young Professional Ambassador, and an Unrestricted Research Gift Award from Meta Platforms, USA. He is the associate editor of IEEE TAP, OJAP, IET-MAP and Reviews of Electromagnetics (RoE).
